Why Do We Get Depressed Children?

As parents, you would never expect your children to suffer from depression. Why do we get depressed children? Well, this is usually down to three things:

1. Current things happening in their lives
2. Changes in their bodies
3. Genetics

Quite often it can be a combination of two or more of the above that make depressed children. If a family has a strong history of depression then this can become prevalent within a child or children at an early age.

Some children who have severe medical problems such as epilepsy, diabetes and even asthma have been known to develop depression as a result of this. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is also known as a contributing factor to developing depressed children, their minds and bodies are too young to be able to handle the activity going on inside them which can trigger chemical reactions that can lead to the depression.

A child's environment is a very important factor in many cases, with households that are a frantic and chaotic will lead to an ever increasing anxiety then on to depression. If a child suffers a terrible life event such as the death of a close one or a witness to a horrific event then this can manifest inside them and can surface as depression up to a year later.

Drug and alcohol abuse at a young age is becoming more widespread and has lead to an increase in depressed children. Drugs such as marijuana are readily available on the streets and easy for kids to get, thus usage by children is becoming a bigger problem now more than ever.

It is estimated that if one of the parents has, or has suffered from depression in the past then the child will have a 40% chance of getting it too. These genetics are stronger if it was the mother who suffered from depression, and is likely to be more severe for the child and also last longer.
