Stress Headaches May Not Be Related to Stress

Do you have stress headaches? If you do, you are not alone. The research clearly shows that a stress headache is one of the most common symptoms of chronic stress.

Stress Diagnosis 101. When a patient visits Dr. David Posen's office (The Little Book of Stress Relief, 2003), the checklist to diagnose chronic stress includes questions about jaw clenching, teeth grinding, tight or sore muscles, dizziness and, of course, headaches. As you probably already know, chronic stress is prolonged exposure to extreme stress. It stands to reason you may have some headaches.

However, chronic stress differs from acute stress. With acute stress, your fight or flight response is called into action and the symptoms of stress, in this situation, include changes in heart behavior such as stronger and faster heartbeats, tightening of the muscles, rapid and shallow breathing, dry mouth, extreme perspiration and tightening in the abdomen. You are unlikely to experience headaches with this type of stress.

What if it isn't stress causing the problem? So often, people write off medical symptoms as stress-related and stress seems to be the catchall category for all symptoms that are difficult to place.

You might be surprised to find out that your symptoms are caused by something completely different. It would be more than worth your while to make an appointment with a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) because headaches are a common symptom of food allergies such as lactose intolerance (inability to digest milk) and wheat gluten allergies (like a bread allergy), as well.

A huge number of people in North America don't suffer from stress headaches at all. While a good stress management program is important for everyone, it is possible that you will never cure your headaches because they are not being caused by stress.

I read a report, recently, from an organic grain-growing cooperative, which would make your skin crawl. What manufacturers and growers do to the grain we eat, as bread is shocking. Of course, we all have a myriad of symptoms such as headaches. It's a wonder we don't all have Celiac Sprue Disease. If that doesn't stress you out, I don't know what will. The whole thing is very unsettling.

So, go immediately to a Naturopath and find out if your headaches really are from stress. Remember, according to economist, Paul Zane Pilzer, and his book, The Wellness Revolution, less than 6% of medical doctors take training in nutritional medicine while in medical school and once they graduate, the majority of their training is provided by pharmaceutical companies. It is unlikely; you will be able to get an accurate diagnosis about headaches from your medical doctor unless he or she is also a specialist in nutritional medicine.

It's time you got some relief from stress headaches. The best stress management program in the world isn't going to help you if you're treating the wrong condition. So find out for sure and start feeling better soon. Stress is not really as mysterious as many professionals would have you believe.
